Severe damage is more likely when boards buckle upward, detach from the subfloor, split, or remain distorted after proper drying. Engineered hardwood may be especially vulnerable if moisture reaches the layered core. Solid hardwood can sometimes be sanded and refinished after drying, but only after moisture levels are stable. Refinishing too early can lock in problems or create a poor result.

Also avoid relying on a household dehumidifier for a widespread water loss.
